Wie viele Paranüsse am Tag? Die richtige Selen-Dosis

How many Brazil nuts a day? The right selenium dose

4 min read Daniel Kofler · 2DiE4 Live Foods Updated:01 Jun 2026

One to two Brazil nuts cover your selenium needs for the whole day. More is not better here. We show you the honest dose and when it tips over.

Short answer: 1 to 2 Brazil nuts a day are enough to cover an adult's selenium needs. The DGE reference value is 60 µg per day for women and 70 µg for men. One Brazil nut delivers roughly 50 to 90 µg of selenium depending on where it grew. Eating more than around three to four nuts a day on a regular basis can exceed the safe upper limit, so one or two are plenty.

Why selenium

Why your body needs selenium

Selenium is a trace element your body cannot make itself. You have to get it from food. It is part of enzymes that protect your cells from oxidative stress, and it is central to the thyroid and the immune system.

In Central Europe the soils are rather low in selenium, so many people sit at the lower end of intake. This is where Brazil nuts come in: they are by far the strongest natural source of selenium there is. To see how it compares with the antioxidant-rich pecan, read Pecan meets Brazil nut.

Content per nut

How much selenium is in a Brazil nut?

This is the key point, and the honest answer is: it varies a lot. The selenium content depends on how selenium-rich the soil was where the nut grew. Values between 50 and 90 µg per nut are common, individual nuts can be above or below.

AmountSelenium (rough)Notes
1 Brazil nutapprox. 50 to 90 µgoften covers the daily need on its own
1 to 2 Brazil nutsapprox. 50 to 180 µgideal daily amount
from approx. 3 to 4 daily250 µg and moreapproaches the upper limit, not long term

Because a single nut can already cover your needs, you do not need a handful. One to two give you room in case one nut is at the lower end.

The dose

How many Brazil nuts per day are ideal?

For a healthy adult, 1 to 2 Brazil nuts a day is the simple rule of thumb. That reliably covers your selenium needs without overdoing it.

  • You do not have to count exactly every day. If you skip a day, you easily make up for it.
  • If you already eat a lot of fish, eggs or organ meat, you take in selenium that way. Then one to two nuts are enough.
  • During pregnancy, breastfeeding or with a thyroid condition, discuss the amount with your doctor.
The limit

Can you eat too many Brazil nuts?

Yes. Selenium is healthy in the right amount, but too much over a long time is unfavourable. EFSA sets the tolerable upper limit for adults at 255 µg per day. Because of the fluctuating content, you can hit that mark with a large handful of Brazil nuts.

A lasting oversupply is called selenosis. Possible signs are brittle nails, hair loss, a garlic-like breath or stomach and gut problems. For everyday life it simply means: a few nuts a day are ideal, a whole bag at once is not.

Why activated makes the difference

Activated Brazil nuts: easier to digest and better available

Brazil nuts have a dense flesh and, like all nuts, contain phytic acid, which binds minerals and makes digestion harder. Activating them in salt water clearly reduces the phytic acid, and the gentle drying below 42 degrees keeps the nutrients intact. The result is a milder, buttery nut that you digest better and from which your body absorbs the minerals more easily.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about Brazil nuts and selenium

How many Brazil nuts can you eat per day?

For healthy adults, 1 to 2 Brazil nuts a day is a good amount. Eating more than three to four a day on a regular basis is not advisable, because the selenium content varies and the upper limit of 255 µg per day can otherwise be exceeded.

How much selenium is in a Brazil nut?

Roughly 50 to 90 µg, depending on the growing region and soil quality. Even one nut can cover an adult's daily need.

Is one Brazil nut a day enough?

Often yes. A selenium-rich Brazil nut already covers the daily need. A second one gives you a buffer in case one nut is at the lower end.

Are activated Brazil nuts better than regular ones?

They are easier to digest. Activation breaks down phytic acid, which makes the minerals more available and the nut milder in taste.
